Basic car. No – Power windows, Locks, cruise, etc. In other words fewer options means fewer things to fail cause problems and grief. Simple 4 cylinder engine with timing chain not belt driven cams. Single overhead cam is better. Lighter weight is better.
Mine is a 1999 Saturn 1.9L manual transmission AC. No frills. I did add the cruise from the salvage yard and had to have the PCM flashed to make it work. The car gets about 36 MPG on long commutes. 30 MPG around town.
And make sure it is very very common so there will be lots of salvage yard parts.
I miss my SC1. Obvious maintenance and the thing was a dynamo. Slow as a snail, but always started. Same as yours, bone stock except for AC which you don’t tend to find cars without. Everything was cheap too, tires, brakes, suspension. Oh so cheap.
My daily driver isn’t being driven anywhere at the moment as one of the seals puked in the turbo and nobody seems to want my money. The only response I got from a recycler couldn’t even tell me the mileage on the car because it wasn’t running, that’s confidence inspiring.
