Well i got my car fixed today for the brake issue i discussed a month or so ago so here is the summery of repairs. I want your opinion on service they say is needed over the overall cost of the car.
Vary Low Engine Oil – Now i check the oil regularly so this surprised me that it was a issue. Upon asking why it was low they told me i need a head gasket. (they stated the head gasket starts leaking at around 15k miles)
Rim was bent causing a beed leak on PF tyre. They fixed that and said its not usual for a steel rim to bend. Cost: $22.50 and a new valve stem.
Brake line had a leak in both DF and the PR sides. Upon replacing said brake lines the DR line blew out all three were replaced for $410 (mind you all three lines were $25.
LH Brake light was out. Not a issue as its not the bulb but a connection issue with the bulb. a simple contact cleaning and a bit of wiggling made it work once again.
Inspection check my coolant is good to -34F good considering its never been changed.
so here is the questions i want answered:
Head Gasket replacement was said to be a 15hr repair and cost $2200 which is more than the car is worth. Can anyone give me a lower price:laber ratio?
They say i need a head gasket and engine shows evidence of such. So question is if the head gasket is leaking and the oil was “vary low” than how come when i check the oil every month its always full it never needs oil and never uses oil. Will putting 10w30 in my car next oil change slow down the leak?
How is it possible to bend the rim? they said once they removed the tyre off the rim to fix the beed leak the inner rim (not the edge of the rim where the beed is) was bent now how is this possible?
If i decide to get the head gasket fixed if i can find it cheap enough should i get the timing belt replaced along with the head gasket?
All said and done it was $406 in labor $11 for fluid (might be oil too) and around $30 in parts it came to be a grand total of $476.80 (Cents rounded up) was this a fair price for the work done?

Serously, If you have a garage (indoor) you can buy the tools arroud 300 $ plus the part and the electronic manual to do the job yourself.

$300? i just put almost $480 in brake lines i cant afford that
I had a similar issue (“Meaning is it worth it.”) with my brother-in-laws car a couple years back he had a ’97-’02 Daewoo Lanos Hatchback that would not stop over heating even after we found the connection to his radiator and thermostat had cracked… it was a plastic piece of “….”
Anyway he decided to go ahead and replace the radiator and thermostat but yet still was overheating, and was not able to find any other reason for this and since my tools had been stolen from his garage 2 months before this situation happened I was not in a position to “Help” him. 😉Point is after he put an est. $600-800 into trying to fix his own vehicle which was only worth about $1k anyways with no real success he asked my opinion, after looking at it once more even just on my visual I could see more possible issues arising in the near future for him and this car not to mention it have overheated pretty bad twice already to my knowledge and I don’t even want to think about what that had done to the internals. I don’t know really what model and or how much your car is worth… unfortunately I think you may be in the same boat he was in and he had to eventually sell his car for basically a “Parts Car” price to recover some of what he lost in parts just to try and get it running again. (And it barely did that when he sold it.)
All in all stop and think before you get too far in over your head, if not already. He spend almost what the car was worth and only was able to sell it for about $300-$500 if I remember correctly, and he still is sore about it today!
In this case I think you may be the only one that can answer your own question here….. Is it worth it?see thats just it mine dont overheat its never overheated its still running on the same antifreeze it was from the factory and still good antifreeze. Other that wiper fluid ive never added any fluids to the car (other than brake fluid when the brake line blew) and oil when i changed it myself in july. it dont use any oil ive never had to add any oil to it between changes i dont have boiling antifreeze white smoke or milky appearance in the oil NOTHING that indicates a blown head gasket. KBB value of the car is $2200 but since the mechanic said its in great shape for its age i could probably get $2500-$3500 outta it if i were ever to sell it. (Which i never will). I love my car and ill make sure it stays running forever it is a reliable car even with 2 blown brake lines it would still stop (slowly and pedal all the way to the floor) but it did still stop. its had only 3 tires replaced since it was new (2 front from picking up nails) and passenger rear from getting a rip on the inner sidewall. I also had 2 brake ins in march 2010 and had both passenger side windows shattered which are documented on youtube and replaced free by the insurance company. i also had to replace the battery in august 2008 (got 8 years out of the factory battery).
This is unfortunately when you will need to do all said work yourself (I know there is a Daewoo forum(s) that discusses at length many types as well and may be able to help with fixing more model specific for you.)… I say that because there is nothing wrong with loving your car but as an older car with a low resale value that is only a financial decision you will have to make as to how much are you willing to spend. Taking your Daewoo into a mechanic shop for repairs is going to be costly no matter where you look, many shops will charge around $70-$100 an hr. for repairs regardless of what kind of car or its value.

(FYI)[/quote]i can get a service manual directly from Daewoo Deawoo still stocks and sells parts for the cars even though they have been outta business for over 10 years. I never encountered ANY shop where they dont know a thing about Daewoos not does any shop have trouble getting parts for its it uses all GM parts other than the body style and interior design the 2004 and Up Aveo is the same car same engine same wheelbase same brakes same shocks same struts same size speakers and even same connector for the stereo. so if i ever encountered a shop that cant work on it or have parts id just tell them its the same as a Aveo (considering the Aveo is NOT a chevy but in reality a Daewoo Kalos the successor to the Daewoo Lanos. The Chevy Cruze is a Daewoo as well ( a Daewoo Lecetti-Premiere) to be exact and it was meant to replace both Daewoo Lacetti and Chevy Cobolt.
Yeah, about the shops that did not know anything about the Daewoo itself considering where my brother-in-law lived at the time I should have said “It did not suprise me” if it does not have a Bow Tie or Ford insignia on the car they did not work on it and there were not that many shops around to choose from. Actually a funny story was when he first got it he needed to get a spare key made for his wife so he and I took the key down to a Lowes or Home Depot I forget which and they said: “Daewhat? Never heard of that… No we can’t make a key for something like that…sorry mister.” I was like okay…. what ever you do don’t loose that key! (I still don’t think he ever got a second key made. 🙂
I am not familiar with the Aveo itself but I have no doubt you are right about the parts being the same… truthfully I am a Ford guy.
