Cylinder head damage

      Hey all. I have a F22a engine from a Honda accord that needs a new head gasket.
      I decided to get the F22B Dohc cylinder head and change my sohc to a dohc with one fowl swoop.
      However, during the shipment of this said dohc cylinder head, damage occurred.
      I have pics. The worst damage is circled where the combustion chamber is. There is a rather deep gouge and
      I am concerned that this will be a problem even after I have the head milled down.

      See pics. The first one is a regular pic, the 2nd is in macro which means is super zoomed in.

      I though of JB weld but then heard that won’t work, then I thought of welding but that would cost too much cause you have to be really skilled to weld on a head surface. I just don’t know what to do. I’m hoping that perhaps this won’t be a problem since its not a huge chunk that is missing, just a quite small piece. But its where the pressure in the combustion chamber is, that is why its such a concern. Perhaps it will blow out a head gasket.

      Please let me know what you guys think, is it okay to use this or not? What should I do if its not okay?

        is it possible too put a DOHC head on your SOHC engine? will all the coolant and oil passages lign up? my biggest concern about the damage where it is is combustion gas leaks… i mean i think the best option you may have is take it too a pro and see if the damage can be repaired, if not you may have too scrap the head…

          Yeah bro, you can do it with the F22 Honda motor, pretty cool isn’t it? The coolant passages line up perfectly, it uses the same headgasket. All I needed for this swap is a new timing gear, a different belt, and a different ecu. That’s pretty much it.

          Anyways. I got some answers from another forum they said to have it TIG welded and then milled down flat, which in my opinion seems to be the best way. My only question is trying to find a competent enough welder as I heard TIG welding (aluminum welding) is very tricky.

          Eric probably never heard of the sohc to dohc head swap, the dohc F22 engine only came out it Japan.

            Tigging is not too bad, you just need to find someone that does it alot. But, yes with damage that bad welding and re-surfacing is your only way to salvage that head.

              I have heard of that. In fact, that’s the engine you find in some Preludes. I had one, nice running engine. That said, you need a machine shop for that kind of work. I’d check the yellow pages to see if there are any in your area. Good luck and keep us posted. I’m sure it will be a bit more work than you expect to get that fitted onto your old engine. I’m curious how you overcome those challenges.

                you might be able to have the head skimmed. they will probably need to take a lot off.and you might not be able to have the head skimmed again HOPE THEY CAN DO IT FOR YOU
