hello guys 😀 i have a 09 dodge charger with a 5.7 hemi. i got a code for a cylinder 5 misfire and the car will run rough when the rpm reaches 4-5. and it loses power and it starts shaking. i went to dodge and made them do a diagnose and they said its something in side the cylinder and will coast me 1700+ to fix. is that true? that this could cause a misfire? any help would be awesome! 😀 hope u guys are having a good day.

I would inquire what needs to be done. If its in the cylinder either
rings or valve issue. A compression test or leak down test will confirm
        this.

It sounds like a lack of diagnosis to me. Maybe they were having a busy day. What they do in that case is quote a worse case scenario and if later the fix is simple you are happy with the reduced cost.

I’d go back and ask then exactly what is wrong. If they don’t know some diagnosis is needed.

They were busy for sure. Milking a customer.
INSIDE the cylinder? Only piston is inside the cylinder. Rest is outside.
Hey, OP, how technical are you? There is simple test to check if it’s spark plug or ignition coil.

I’d place my bets on the ignition coil. Usually ignition problems manifest at higher rpms and fuel at lower rpms. Both can also cause a misfire. How did they diagnose it as “inside the cylinder”? Did they use a borescope…or were they just takin a guess?

If there were a foreign object “inside the cylinder” which is the innuendo here, it would be acting stupid at all RPM ranges.

For hard part wear like rings or valves, it is unlikely you have internal engine damage unless you have been beating the hell out of it or managed to rack up 250,000 miles in 5 years. Even with that mileage it doesn’t mean the engine WILL have internal problems, just more likely.

Unless you want to do some diagnosing of your own, take it to a different shop that will do a real diagnosis instead of speculations.

I had a Ford with a miss I took to the Ford dealership for diagnosis. They said it needed a new head. Well, I was angry when I saw there wasn’t a mark on the engine, it hadn’t been touched. So, I took it home and diagnosed it myself. It needed a new head.

So, how did the mechanic know without touching the engine? I later found out all the heads on those engines were bad – 100%.

So, there is the that possibility.

I believe the technician might have seen this problem several times before and knows what the problem is.
It should have been explained to you in more detail however so you can make an educated decision before spending the cash to repair it.

i will try to bring the rpm high so the car starts shaking and start the unplugging the coils one by one method and see if there is a difference or not

How did you figure out it was the valve?

Hemi engines are well known for broken valve springs

the mechanic lifted the car in the air and got it to misfire and then they checked the engine for the inside thats how they knew
