Im not too familiar with Nissan,
but Audi’s Multitronic CVT are prone to failure if you don’t change transmission fluid often enough.
Im also never even thinking about towing my car if the enigne is not running.

The service manual says its ok to tow in neutral, but not more than 50km.
But Im not taking any chances because the oilpump is not running if engine is off, so the moving parts inside the gearbox is not properly lubricated. To me thats equivalent to excessive wear.

I know a little about them. (see sig line). The newer one’s are a lot better, but they do seem to be the weakest point of the vehicle. The good news is that if they do, they go out in the warranty period. A lot of great things about a CVT. For instance you get really good highway and city MPG with them even when pushing a relatively large vehicle even if you drive fast, Heat is their enemy. Not good tow vheicles for towing or being towed. Heat is their enemy. CVT’s run hot, really hot.

There’s very few places in North America that service the internals of CVTs. When they fail, you simply replace them.

the only thing you can do is follow the recommended extreme, heavy use or if neither are available use the regular maintenance schedule. This city is extremely hard on vehicles, trust me. I too had to go to work Friday morning in a -45 windchill.

My step mother modified a 2003 honda CRV by adding a cooling unit to her transmission to be able to tow a trailler. would you recommend that we do that? will it have to be done by the dealership?

There is a factory kit for the one’s that don’t have them on most models. It’s pricey but it’s factory fit and works great. It includes a new block piece that goes on the transmission that your coolant hoses run through, and it has 4 outlets (two for fluid, two for coolant) instead of just the 2 outlets.

The best thing you can do is replace the fluid with OEM fluid every 30k miles. I had a Nissan Altima with CVT , never had problems , but traded it to my dealer for an Altima with a 6 speed manual. Love it.
