My front Passengers side cv joint boot seems leaking. There is a lot grease spill on the inside wheel and brake system parts. Overall the wheel can spin good, no noise yet. Do you think should I need to replace the boot? I watched Eric’s video, it is a lot work just replace the piece rubber. I saw a product call Split Boot, which two pieces boot and needs to glue together, but many people complaint this design. What is your guys suggestion?
Also, do you think the spilled grease can damage the ABS or traction control sensor? Because currently when I make sharp right turn, the traction control light will blink couple times. My car is 2001 Sequoia, 4 wheel drive.

If you care to procrastinate you may drive around a short while. The axle won’t fail immediately. Otherwise it is either a new boot or a replacement axle.

Split boots are not worth a crap.
Sometimes if you replace just the boot, those metal straps to hold the boot can be a REAL pain to clamp correctly.
For all the hassles, it is probably best to replace the axle, even if that means cheaping out and getting one from a junk yard.

BTW – axle replacement is ALWAYS a huge nightmare.

Maybe I have a natural talent for boot clamps but they have never given me any trouble. You generally need a special tool for the clamp. No having that could be trouble.

yeah go ahead and replace the axles, for that Toyota you can get good aftermarket ones for less than $100. it’s usually cheaper just to replace the axles rather than replacing just the boot. Whatever you do, DO NOT buy rebuilt axles, they often don’t last long at all!

If you see grease like that the most likely cause is a leaking CV boot. I do not recommend the split boot option. I think you’re much better off installing a new boot. However another option would be to let it go until it starts clicking. These days axles aren’t much more expensive than boots and it’s often easier just to swap out an axle assembly over replacing a boot.

Good luck and keep us posted.
