I have a 2001 Subaru Forester. There is a small slit in my cv boot and it has leaked some grease. I know that the best thing to do is to replace the axle and that is my intention. In the meantime, can I add more grease through the slit in the boot and then patch it to buy me some time before i replace the axle? And what can I use to patch the hole? Could I use gasket maker?

If you are planning on replacing the CV joint soon, I say just leave it as is and keep driving it. Dirt and/or water probably already got in there, anyways. I don’t know of any methods of repairing a torn boot to extend the life of an axle. 😛

There used to be repair boots available that were installed without having to remove the axle. The boots were split lengthwise, and you glued them together after they were put in place.

I haven’t seen them in a while, though, so I’m not sure if they’re still on the market. If you can find them to fit your vehicle, they might be worth it as a temporary repair until you get around to changing your axle.
