Hey, I have a 1996 Nissan Altima GXE, automatic, 178,xxx miles. I am having a problem with cruise control. I press the button to turn on cruise control, and the it lights up, but when I press the “Set” button on the steering wheel end let off the gas, I just start slowing down. I really would like this fixed for some upcoming highway drives.. Please, any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Are you getting any check engine light/codes… Is your speedometer working fine? Check your fuses and also check to see if your brake light is working. If the brake switch under your pedal is not working the cruise control will be disabled.. Sometimes the problem can be the button. Also check the cruise control unit under the hood and any linkage to the throttle body…

yes, I have had a light for Overdrive malfunction, and the airbag light is always on(fault in the system). Speedometer works fine, brake lights work too, and I can’t seem to locate a fuse for cruise control.

I would not be surprised if that transmission error code had domething to do with it. ..

whoops, my mistake. It’s a 3rd gear ratio code.(Causing overdrive not to work though)

That code will also disable the cruse control. Codes like that disable the cruise control as a measure of self preservation. You need to address the transmission issue if you want the cruse to work. Also, if you’re planning a long trip you won’t want your transmission going out on you.

                Keep us posted.
