So a couple months ago my high pressure PS hose started leaking. Upon further investigation, I found a pin needle hole in it and every time I turned the wheel, fluid started coming out like crazy.

I typically do repairs on my Jeep on my own, but the hose end looked like it was difficult to get to. Seems like it terminated behind the headlight. I think the repair manual said I had to take the radiator or rack & pinon out. Something crazy.

So I decided to take it to a mechanic. A friend said his son manages a shop and said he would give me a good deal. $300 later I got a new hose. OR DID I?

I was doing some random work and my monthly visual inspection of the Jeep and found this. I was told by the shop he was doing to install a replacement Mopar part.

A quick search found this picture from a parts store website:

haha….thanks. I only questioned it, because that is exactly the spot it was leaking from previously and there wasn’t a crimp there before the repair.

Now, they did did top it off with ATF instead of PS fluid which is what the manual calls for. Is that something I should be concerned with?

He may have done you a favor. My neighbor has a Dodge truck, had his ps pump replaced. It went out not long later. I think his manual said it took ps fluid as well. However it turned out Chrysler later sent a revision to dealerships to use ATF in ps pumps. His new pump has been holding up well since switching to ATF. Check into that. He may be a good mechanic way ahead of you.

Both my Fords call for ATF in the ps pump. The last mechanic who worked on the Ranger put ps fluid in it. I since flushed that out, after it started making noises. I hope I caught it in time.

Thank you all for your help. As it turns out there was a TSB released from Chrysler to switch from PS Fluid to ATF4. The fluid was a light pink so I went ahead and flushed the system. Pretty easy job and had some extra ATF4 in the garage from servicing the transfer case last month. Now its a nice cherry red.

Also, I apologize if I offended any mechanics out there. I’m just not used to anyone working on my Jeep.
