Crankshaft Grinding Noise

I just replaced the oil pump and oil pickup on my 1995 Acura Integra because I had a low oil pressure light on. Now I have discovered that when I crank the engine, it will not idle because of a crankshaft issue that is causing a very loud, constant grinding noise. Could this be due to bad bearings or maybe something got severely damaged? I’m going to drain the oil and check for shavings as well as examine the crankshaft through the oil pan housing. I would really appreciate some information.

Glad to hear you got the noise fixed. That said, oil pumps are not responsible for creating oil pressure, the clearances in the bottom end are. So if you still have an oil pressure issue, you’re likely going to have to replace the engine. I say replace because it is often more expensive to do a rebuild than it is to replace an engine. And with Hondas, you need to measure all the bearing clearances to know what bearings to get. This can make things difficult for some people and if it’s not done right, you just destroyed a freshly rebuilt engine.
I don’t know if your engine has this but one time a rebuilt engine at startup I heard was making a horrible noise – very loud. It turned out to be a bent inspection plate hitting the flex plate bolts. Scary for a couple seconds but then funny.
So in other words – loud, obnoxious engine noises are not a comforting sound?

Only to the mechanic that is to be paid for repairing it. 😉

Luckily the oil pump solved the issue. There wasn’t much oil getting pumped through. My next guess would have been bearings or a blocked oil galley. Thanks Eric.

OK just wanted to verify that because Honda oil pumps are rarely an issue in my experience. Thanks for the follow up.
