Crankshaft Grinding Noise

I just replaced the oil pump and oil pickup on my 1995 Acura Integra because I had a low oil pressure light on. Now I have discovered that when I crank the engine, it will not idle because of a crankshaft issue that is causing a very loud, constant grinding noise. Could this be due to bad bearings or maybe something got severely damaged? I’m going to drain the oil and check for shavings as well as examine the crankshaft through the oil pan housing. I would really appreciate some information.
Well nevermind. I just had to take the spark plugs out so the pistons wouldn’t compress the air. I did find tons of metal shavings in the oil when I drained it out.
Sorry. Engine will need a rebuild from the sound of that noise. That’s metal to metal contact.

Got any pick and pulls in your area for a cheap engine? Cause that’s going to hurt ($$$) trying to repair that damage.

If the oil pump isn’t primed–then it dry runs—can’t build up any oil flow or pressure—and the pump will roast, as well all the moving parts being starved for oil.

Even money bet–pull the oil pan and you will find connecting rods all loose and sloppy on the crank.

          Can’t sugar coat that…

Actually nothing was loose at all. The crankshaft rotated smoothly and no bearing caps were loose. Nothing was loose like I was expecting. It rotated fine.

Can you disable fuel and ignition and run the starter with the oil pan off?

That might be the best way to pinpoint the noise in that case. Just saying the last time I heard that exact sound–the engine I was asked to ‘check’ threw a rod within a minute of the engine starting.

I could, but I’m kind of sketched out on doing it for more than 3 seconds. I took the oil pump off, the oil pan and the timing belt off of the crankshaft sprocket. When I rotate the crankshaft by hand though, I do not hear anything rubbing or grinding against something else.

Yeah…Really do not want to spin the crank/rods without the timing belt being attached. If the engine is what’s known as “interference” type? It’s all to possible to damage the valves. (as in…piston goes up with a valve in the downward position. Result? SMACK!!)

If the timing belt is removed? I wouldn’t risk spinning the crank with the starter unless you know 100% it’s safe.

I did the rotation by hand before I took off the timing belt. I’m just very puzzled as to what is making that sound. I can’t really find it anywhere.

The only other thing that comes to mind would be a missing shim on the starter causing starter to bind up slightly. Other then that? I’m pretty much shrugging over here….

                        Haha. Well, thanks anyways.

Actually, the crankshaft is fine. I turned it by hand and even used the started to turn it. Smooth as butter. I wander what else it could be.

I don’t know if your engine has this but one time a rebuilt engine at startup I heard was making a horrible noise – very loud. It turned out to be a bent inspection plate hitting the flex plate bolts. Scary for a couple seconds but then funny.

Is that the plate next to the oil pan? It doesn’t really sound like a grinding sound anymore. I’m really not too sure how to describe it.

That’s the one. If it is hitting there and you pull it off you should see a mark. It shouldn’t hit unless it is bent.

That’s EXACTLY what it was. Thank you so much man!!!

Very glad it wasn’t something super bad…
