Got a crank/no-start on a snapper push lawn mower with briggs and stratton 2 stroke engine, separate oil/gas.

I have no prior history of this lawnmower, other than “it just doesn’t work”, but it seems like a good ruggedly built mower… just got to get it to work.

      Here I diagnose no spark:

Since there is no spark, I immediately suspect the coil. Now, it’s just a matter of getting to the coil

Disassembled discharge shroud, upper cable guard and gas tank:

      Taking off engine cover:

      Exposed flywheel, magnets, and coil:

      And… at last, the coil:

Just waiting on replacement parts… in the meantime, i will be doing a lot of cleaning around the engine, air filter, carbuerator and exhaust.

Refreshing to see another 2 stroker mechanic. I got a Craftsmen here that im working on but its got a carb issue, going to fix it later this summer. But awesome post man, just had to say nice to see some one else know there way around these. I learned two stroke believe it or not working on chainsaws.lol

i’m not really into 2-strokes specifically… to me it’s just an aspirated engine just like anything else lol.

if it can suck, squeeze, push and blow then i am confident I can break into it and figure it out.. and maybe learn something along the way. 🙂

That’s not a 2 stroke it’s a 4 stroke Briggs and Stratton. That engine will never fire the gap of that spark tester. It takes at least 20.000 volts to fire those testers and that Briggs has 15.000 at most. Does it have points or a module? Does it have any compression? Does it have fresh gas in it? Is the stop wire from the coil grounding out. If you’re sure there is no spark disconnect the wire at the stop on the carb linkage and try it. You can’t get anymore simple than they are.

Thank you for the clarification. Your observation confirms my theory that small engine work may not be my forte’.

That engine will never fire the gap of that spark tester.

I was aware that this might be an issue; therefore, I used a brand new OEM dspark plug with .030″ gap and placing the electrode on the engine block as a secondary means to check for spark.

Does it have points or a module?

              No.

              Does it have any compression?

To make life easier, I took out the spark plug almost immediately in order to facilitate easy cranking of the engine… and I could feel the compression easily from 3 or 4ft. away. I was impressed.

Does it have fresh gas in it?

For the most part, the gas tank was not even attached to the engine. Fuel delivery was not my main concern. My primary concern above all else was to establish good and consistent spark.

Is the stop wire from the coil grounding out. If you’re sure there is no spark disconnect the wire at the stop on the carb linkage and try it.

I have isolated any possibly of a ‘short to ground’ from the kill switch or any other means by disconnecting any electrical connection to the coil. Just for fun, I did test the two circuits that potentially could ground the coil in the event that I did get spark and these circuits tested fine.

Looks like you covered everything quite well. Sorry for coming across a little brash but i just completed a conversation that didn’t go well….LoL.

If you’re anything like i am you don’t give up easily. Keep us posted.
