Hi, I have a 1994 Saturn SL2 130,XXX miles 1.9 ltr DOHC. It has had an egr code for a while now, and I decided to clean the egr valve… upon completion, I noticed the throttle body was pretty dirty so I thought why not clean it now. I unintentionally sprayed a LOT of carb cleaner into the throttle body… now my car won’t start.. it popped a couple times, and almost started until the battery died. Put the battery on charger, and looked online and a few people said to put the gas to the floor and crank until it starts. Well, that only made things worse. Now it just cranks and cranks until the battery dies. I’m waiting overnight to let anything in the cylinders and throttle body evaporate. I took the plugs out and cleaned them also. They were dripping wet. I’m really hoping it starts. Any suggestions if it doesn’t start?

When you try and start the engine, hold your foot to the floor on the gas to put it into ‘clear flood mode’. This will turn off the fuel injectors while you crank. It may take a while, but it should start eventually. Also, not a bad idea to leave the plugs out overnight to let them and the cylinders dry out. Good luck and keep us posted.
Well, got it running again! Replaced spark plugs, and just kept at it. MAKE SURE YOU DON’T WEAR OUT THE STARTER! It doesn’t hurt to add a little starting fluid. Once it started it ran a little rough for a few seconds and smoked white smoke for a good 5-10 minutes. I drove it around the block a few times, and when I got back it wasn’t smoking anymore. I love a happy ending. I wouldn’t recommend the starting fluid however. Remember that you’re trying to cure a flooded condition. Adding more fuel can make the situation worse. You just have to crank until you get most of the fuel out of there. You’re correct in that you need to be aware of starter overheat. Don’t crank longer than 20sec at a time if you can help it.
