so heres my story. i had a mechanic friend install a used alternator on my 2006 kia rio5 after my old one died. now close to a year later im having issues with the used alternator running high voltage.no sursprise. the worst part is, i had to learn this the hard way. before the engine light came on, my friends took my car for some long distance driving. when i got it back the next day thats when the engine light came on. Battery acid got really hot and leaked all over the place. i did my best to clean it up with baking soda solution and but the light stayed on. about a week or two later i went to run an errand and had left the light on inside the car for few hours so when i went to start the engine it struggled. it did turn over so i ran my errand and left it running for about 5 mins or so, on the way back home little by little i lost all my electrical power and then the engine died. i popped the hood and the CAT had gotten so hot that the plastic liner way under it melted. when i go to get my engine light checked only the code P0563 shows up. i have been driving it with the high voltage for about a month now. i haven’t had anymore issues with the CAT but do you think if i continue to drive it like this will that it will cause more malfunctions? thanks for your time!- wendy

Voltage does not have anything to do with the cat. It will affect
        the electronics and sensors.

It appears that your voltage regulator isn’t working properly which may mean you need to replace your alternator again if the voltage regulator is inside the alternator. I would do it sooner than later to avoid any issues. I would replace your battery too if it leaked a bunch of acid. While you have it all apart I would sand the mounting points of the alternator to make sure it is getting a good ground as well as the battery connections with a wire brush.

You can take it to AutoZone and they can test your battery and alternator for free so you know for sure that you need to replace one or both.
