I have a 2001 Corolla ve. Code p0171 popped up. “System lean bank 1” so I’ve been trying to figure out what is going on. It seems to only sputter like it’s getting to much air or to much fuel when either the a/c is on, or the heat is on, or if the vent to let the outside air is open. I did have an exhaust leak before the upstream o2 sensor closest to the header and put a new gasket and tightened that back up. I thing that would fix my issue but didn’t. I’ve also clean the maf sensor, changed spark plus, changed pcv valve, changed intake manifold gasket, changed the upstream o2 sensor closest to the header to a denso one, also checked for vacuum leaks by spray carb cleaner and seeing if the idle changed but didn’t. Not sure what else to do that im able to do my self. I just have a cheap scan tool. I also took a screw driver to check the fuel injectors by putting my ear up the screw driver and they all clicked the same. Could it be an idle air control valve? Any help is appreciated.

After all you have done, i would look at replacing the fuel injectors. May be clogged or imbalanced. There is a tool to check for how much they are spraying (used with a fuel pressure gauge) , but it costs as much as 4 new densos off ebay(a little over $100)

Do you think a dirty air filter could caused any issues? I’ve has he car corn 7 years and I don’t think I’ve changed the filter is around 3-4 years.

Yes, restricted airflow to the throttle body can cause this issue.
