Cooling system help

Well my Daewoo broke down tonite. Bellowed smoke antifreeze spilled all over the street. I limped it home as it overheated 2 times (getting home on 2 quarts or water), by the time i got home it was smoking and gauge on H. Inspecting the Thermostat housing split in half. From what i get this is a common thing that happens on the Lanos. I just had the brake lines replaced how did they not notice this?

Anyway I am seeking help. Seems to be a simple repair 2 bolts holding the housing to the engine and 2 hoses to remove. The thermostat fell out (while removing bags i tied around to make it home) is the thermostat likely still ok? Do i have to bleed the cooling system (thanks to eric i know how to) or can i just add more antifreeze to the resivor (no rad cap) and just run the engine to cycle it through? Also Anything else i should check/replace due to the few seconds it overheated (let it cool down for 5 minutes before starting).

the smoking part im worried about hope you have done no damage beyond the over heating.. you should know pretty quickly when you fire it back up.. and always bleed the coolent system…. best of luck bud and hope she dont smoke on restart . i would replace the thrmostat also

The smoking was due to antifreeze leaking onto A/C Compressor and exhaust manifold. Atleast i know what the melting plastic smell was now. Should i replace the upper rad hose too (it is connected to what is left of the housing) Also i have a rip in a hose on the Air Intake not sure what this hose is called it connects between where the airbox goes to the throttle body.

Below is a picture of the engine bay the blue is the hose i am talking about yellow is the cooling system.

Based upon inspection this morning the ripped hose is the MAF hose has it goes from the Airbox to the fuel rail. The hose is almost completely severed. Rad hose seems perfectly fine. No dry rot cracks. Thermostat seems to be ok it is not bent dented or rusted. I will be taking pictures and making a video later today.

Replace the thermostat the o ring for the thermostat replace any damaged hoses and bleed the cooling system I believe the lanos takes 50/50 premix

The O Ring is perfectly in tact not brittle and still flexable. Where do i put the O ring? it fell out with the thermostat so i dont know where to put it.

I just went through this with a 2003 jeep liberty.. some jerk put the thermostat in backwards restricted the flow.. so definitely replace the thermostat and the gasket, if the gasket is the rubber kind it usually fits around the thermostat in some fashion and seats inside the housing, replace that housing and i would replace the hoses, or if not at least the upper hose since thats the hotter one at any time the engine runs… check the radiator for cracks ..pressure had to build up to blow out that housing, even if thats something that happens on these models….
bleed the system of course..and you will have to replace that maf hose… that helps prevent vaccuum leaks which can cause other things to happen…and check the sensor for damage, you may have to clean it.. which is simple ..get a can of maf cleaner ..spray it a few times allow to dry at least 30mins and you are done…

Car is all fixed now i got a metal housing from a ’04 Aveo. Thermostat came with it so i just bolted the new one on. The rad hose was a bitch to get on the EGR hose had no replacement so i used duct tape only option there was. To do the job i had to remove the upper rad hose, the Airbox, the Airbox hose and unplugged the MAF sensor. I had to use a swivel socket wrench, small extension a socket adaptor and a 12mm socket. I also bought some Throttle body cleaner and cleaned that used the cleaner to clean out upper rad hose and parts of the engine. Filled it up to fill line with green antifreeze and started the car all antifreeze went into the engine the tank went empty i filled it up until i ran out of antifreeze than added water. I have small dripping but otherwise it works fine.

when i first started the car it hesitated almost like it wasnt going to start was this due to the fact that there was no coolant in the block at all? I have not even taken it on a test drive yet (need gas) could the bad thermostat housing (old one) cause bog down? (giving it gas last night caused the old one to split) or could the rip in what NAPA said was the EGR hose cause the bog down? What i want to know is how a rip in the EGR hose even happened its never been even touched before only have replaced the air filter twice since owning the car.

So thats what the cylinder looking thing is. The hose is oppisite. if you look at the attaced image below in one of my earlier posts youll see that cylinder looking thing on the left side of engine between engine and battery. The EGR Hose is on the right side of engine by the airbox and is marked in blue.

Well searching on the internet i found that the cracked hose i duct taped is a PCV Hose NOT a EGR Hose. I cannot find a replacement hose anywhere since there is no Daewoo Dealerships anymore. However Daewootech stated any silicon hose cut to fit will replace it. They said this hose can cause rough idle. So my question is will the duct tape serfice or should i really look into investing into a silicon hose?

YES THE BAD THERMOSTAT CAN STAY CLOSED AND CAUSE THE FLOW TO STOP OR SEVERELY SLOW DOWN…THE EGR WOULD ACTUALLY DO THE OPPOSITE AND CAUSE A RAPID IDLE AND SOMETIMES SPEED UP WHEN DRIVING

So you think the thermostat failed and hence melted the housing? I made a mistake it is a PCV hose the Lanos does not have a EGR system. Apparently NAPA doesn’t know what they are talking about.
