Cooling fan trouble

Hello! I have a 1996 Nissan Altima GXE 2.4L Automatic. I noticed a problem.. The cooling fans seem to cycle on and off rapidly (within 10 second intervals) only when the AC is on. This happens even when the engine is cold. When the fans cycle on, you can see and hear the rpms go down and the engine gets more load.. I am just lost on what this could be. The AC blows really cold! Also, When the rpms go up, the temperature gauge rapidly drops to C and dances around there until I let off the gas, then it rapidly jumps back up to where it was. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Check your coolant level. The cooling fans should stay on
when the ac is on. check the fan connectors.

You may also need to have the AC pressures checked. If it’s overcharged, it might also exhibit those symptoms. The AC clutch often engages with the fans. If the clutch is cycling at the same time as the fans, I’d be checking the AC system for possible faults. You may have to take it to a professional to have this done. More info here.

What seems odd to me is what the engine temperature gauge is doing. But, yes, I”d check if (and why) the A/C compressor is short cycling. However, the coolant gauge malfunction makes me think an important ground wire is disconnected somewhere. If too much current has to route through a different ground wire it can lead to burnt wiring in the harness.

I am going to check the pressures soon and let you guys know the results. Also, Where would the ground wire be that would be causing the temp gauge to do what it’s doing? I just noticed a problem today; a LOT of hesitation when accelerating. replaced plugs, wires, new fuel pump, next is fuel filter. I also have an exhaust leak at the flex pipe. Would that cause such hesitation? The car seems like its going to just die unless I hit the gas a lot.

Either the A/C is low on refrigerant or the high pressure cut out switch is going bad. The temp gauge problem sounds like a poor engine to body ground or a poor connection on the gauge temp sending switch.

Please create a new post for the hesitation you’re having. That will keep our database happy. Also, don’t assume it’s a grounding problem. It could be a problem internal to the cluster. There may also be some other cause.

Okay, I’ve checked the AC levels, and it was extremely low. I put a full can of r134a and it still needs another.. Very low! Thanks for all the help!

Good find. just be sure you don’t overcharge the A/C. Might be a good idea to have the A/C leak inspected.
