I have a 98 Ford Escort with about 160xxx miles on it. Runs great! About 3 months ago while getting my car ready for winter I replaced my thermostat as I normally do each year.
So I was driving around town yesterday doing stuff I drove for about an hour and the car heated up just fine reached the middle of the gauge just like it always does. I made a stop where my girlfriend had to run in the store. I keep the car running because here in Ohio it hasn’t been above the 30’s in almost a week. So as I was sitting in there and I noticed (after sitting for about ten minutes) that my temp gauge was just barely over a quarter of the way. It had dropped from the middle to a quarter away from cold. I thought this was really weird. I know its cold outside but could it really has this much effect?
Once she got back in the car and we started to drive aging it went right back to the middle with no problem.
Any idea what would cause this? I keep my car in pretty good condition doing all maintenance that I can. I have never noticed this before but I don’t know if I just hadn’t seen this before.

If use you car heater in your car, you use a part of you engine heat. So, your heater is a second radiator. Then if you facing the wind when you siting in front a red light you might notice temperature drop. I live In Canada in Quebec province and the temperature was -40°C whit the wind. My gage dropped all the time when I use my heater and on idle at the red light. But was in the middle when I did not use the heater. How to diagnose :
If your temperature sensor was not working, you will have automatically radiator fan start problem and you should not be able to see the gage going up. You will see the gage stuck in C.
