Hello, I’m new here 🙂 I just change the water pump on a 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser. It was leaking. I bleed cooling system. There are no leaks. The car overheated to where it blew a hole in the resevoir . Prior to that when i turn engine over with radiator cap removed, coolant gushes out like a water hose. I think I know what it is but I hope I wrong! Any suggestions because I’m tired of this car already. Changing water pump was time consuming. I went ahead and changed timing belt also.

Good move replacing the timing belt when you replaced the water pump. They both require replacement at the same time (about every 100,000 miles) so changing them both saves a lot of time vs having to go through roughly the same job twice and as you now know it’s not a “Quick and Easy” job. As far as the overheating goes, since you said that you have bled the cooling system to remove all the air pockets, have you checked the thermostat and pressure tested the cap? I’m assuming that the coolant is coming out where the cap should be?

see if this helps. try lowering the coolant level when purging.
You may need to do a block test to confirm combustion gas in the coolant.

WHEN THAT HAPPENS …DON’T TURN THE ENGINE OVER…..TIME FOR THE BICYCLE…PROBLEM SOLVED!…BUT IF YOU MUST KNOW LIKE MANY GERMAN CARS YOU MUST PURGE THE SYSTEM OF AIR….THE VALVE IS USUALLY LOCATED ON TOP OF THE RADIATOR TRANSFER HOSE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BLOCK OR ENGINE AREA. YOU WILL HAVE TO HUNT FOR A FITTING NEAR THE EDGE OF THE HOSE MOUTH ON THE NECK OF THE BLOCK BRACKET USUALLY ONE MACHINED PIECE. LET THE SYSTEM RUN AND OPEN THE NUT OR BOLT SLIGHTLY AND EXPEL SOME FREEZE! 2-4 OZ. NOT MUCH…UNTIL IT IS CLEAR OF BUBBLES……OR BUY A BUBBLE GUN, RIDE THE BICYCLE OR TAKE THE BUS AND REMEMBER CARS AND TRUCKS ARE THE BANE OF OUR EXISTENCE WHEN THEY PEE ALL OVER OUR PLANS MUCH LIKE OUR PETS!

Classic case of a blown head gasket.
