      Greetings Folks:

I have a 2004 Jeep Liberty with a 3.7lt 6 cylinder w/ 58,000 miles. Was curious if there would be any benefit in switching to synthetic oil from conventional oil? If so is there anything special that needs to be done when switching over?

      Thanks,

      Bull

nope there is nothing you have to do to switch between them… you can switch back and forth as much as you want… I do want to tell you some ppl notice more oil leaking and more noises when useing synthetic oil because is will get more into tighter spots the reg oil…. so I just to let you know

Not yet. Give it synthetic when it has over 100,000 or so miles on it.

Just out of interest, why is the mileage so low on a 12 year-old vehicle? Is this a case of having been parked for an extended period of time?

we just recently bought the car, it had been totaled in a wreck and a body shop by our house bought it and rebuilt it. We suspect it was someones secondary vehicle. The car-fax on it had it always being dealer serviced and well taken care of. It was inspected by the Missouri Highway Patrol when they applied for the new title on it and we had our mechanic put it up on the rack and check it out and everything looked good.

Well, I hope it all works out well for you. From what you describe, you could be looking at a potential “can of worms” scenario, but it doesn’t necessarily have to happen that way.

As for your oil question, as long as the engine isn’t leaking or burning oil, I’d say you are good for switching to synthetic oil. You might find that the new oil gets dark quickly after the first couple of oil changes, but that’s due to the superior cleaning action of synthetic oil.

I was a bit apprehensive about buying a rebuilt car too, but I trust the mechanic we use as he does the same type of rebuilding and knows what to check and gave it a clean bill of health.

                      Thanks again everyone!
