Connecting PCM connector to ground

Basic question here:

To test the purge valve on my ’03 Civic LX, the manual is saying “…or connect ECM/PCM connector terminal B21 to body ground with a jumper wire.”

Before turning the key, I should unplug that connector and jump terminal B21?

Or do I leave it connected and use a pin to make a connection from the back? And wouldn’t I risk shorting out the ECM doing that?

To be safe.unplug the purge valve. then hook 12v to one side
and ground the other side.This way you test the valve with no
damage to the electronics.
