Okay, so about 2 days ago, I was turning a corner onto a road when about halfway through the turn my brother and I heard AND felt a slight clunk through the floor of the car. Pushing on the gas pedal no longer worked so the first thing to come to my mind was the transmission.

I quickly put it into neutral and rolled into the gas station lot luckily a few feet to my right after we made the left turn. No trans fluid was leaking or anything. tried putting in any gear and none worked. Park wouldn’t even work, it was just light neutral.

I would put it into park then straight into park and it would make a grinding noise for a second or two, almost as if the trans is still spinning or something. I have had the front left wheel make some sound before all this happened. It made the sound worse when turning left and the incident happened when I was turning left. Thought it was the wheel bearing because the sound got worse over time. It has had a slight hard shift from 1st to 2nd lately before all of this happened.

Came to get it the next day to find some trans fluid under it, maybe a cup or two leaked. Pulled it home and put it up on jacks. Checked to see where the leak was and all we could see was fluid around the pan and drain plug of the transmission.

With the front up off the ground, we wanted to start the car and see if it was an axle or something but now, the darn thing won’t even start. It turns over, just won’t start. Did the fuel pump come off for the safety thing or something?

Any kind of help is appreciated. My family is down to 1 car now!

        What kind of car?

If the trans were shot, it would most likely at LEAST have park unless the differential was screwed up.

My first guess is one of the CV joints is broken. With ONE wheel off the ground (and using a jack stand) one of you get under the car and the other one should spin the wheel that is in the air. Give it a hard spin. Also give each boot a good visual inspection.

        If –
The wheel rotates a few degrees each way then stops, the axles and differential might be OK. REALLY try to force the tire to spin by hand. Don’t worry, you cannot break anything like that.
The wheel rotates freely, either a CV joint or something in the final drive of the trans is busted. Try to wobble the outer CV’s in, out, up, down, etc… You may feel a tiny bit of play if they are good but should be pretty tight.

this might be wishful thinking but if one of the CV joints did bust (most likely left side outer joint) it may have also somehow ruined that side transaxle seal, causing the leak. A loose axle will jar the hell out of itself when spinning free. Bad for the outer trans seals involved. Fairly easy to replace seal if you can locate a new one.

None of this explains why the car won’t start but just some stuff to check for why the thing just went neutral.
