Hello again, so I always run a mechanical oil pressure gauge in all my cars because I want to see my oil pressure at all times and not just rely on the idiot light.

Anyway, my recent purchase is a 2006 G6 GTP (with the 3.9 engine). It has the cam-in-block design. I installed a mechanical oil pressure gauge and did not expect to see what I saw:

      at normal operating temp:

800 rpm or idle – oil pressure read 25 psi (ok good)
1850 rpm – 36 psi – this threw me off big time because I was expecting high numbers.
3000 rpm and higher – oil pressure reads max 40 psi – what???

Apparently my Haynes book says at 1850 rpm the oil pressure range should read between 30 and 45 psi.

What pisses me off is that NO ONE can tell me any info on this. Not even the dealer and I called several dealers…they have no clue. The book only has that one reading (30 – 45 at 1,850 rpm).

My oil is perfect after driving 2000 miles since I bought it, no burning, no smoke, no leaks, no knock, no nothing.

Please offer any info if you got it.

Try a mechanical gauge taped to the windshield to see if there is
a difference. If your gauge is correct. I don’t think 5 psi + or – will
hurt it. how many miles on the motor?

I’ll try that. It has 82k miles. Runs very strong.

            GM Specs…30 – 45 psi @ 1850 rpm for the 3.5 and 3.9 engine. For the 5.3 V-8 engines oil pressure should be 18 psi. @ 2000 rpm’s.

Chevy designed engines always ran lower oil pressure than what everybody thinks they should.

Ok, that’s reassuring. It still blows my mind but definitely reassuring. Thanks!

I’ve been looking in my old training books and engineer’s emails addresses that taught and designed that engine to come up with your answer. E-mails have been returned…with no recipient and training books don’t say anymore than what you have.

                Personally, I think you have good oil pressure @ 3000 RPM’s for a 3.9L.

If I get any more info, I’ll pass it on…sorry I couldn’t help more.
