      1998 Nissan Sentra 1.6ltr, 5 speed clutch

My sisters starter pooped out. She sold the car and the guy is making payments, so it’s more complicated. She doesn’t want to spend the 80 and none of the four salvage yards have one. I’m wondering if any other makes/models/years of Nissan use a compatible starter.

Planning on going to a salvage yard down the line. Was hoping there were more options because the last two times I went down there there was one than none.

Yes, she has been pop starting car.

Yeah I know. I would leave the car as is. She’s selling it for $500. The buyer gave her $150 down payment and was going to make weekly installments…. BAD.
Payments are bad. Payments on a car someone else is driving is really bad. Any number of things can go wrong with a car that age.
Asked her about taking it off the road and informing the buyer. She has other vehicles to drive.

I’m pretty sure the salvage yards have something called an ‘interchange’ manual that shows that stuff.

All these take the same starters:

            200SX(4)1995-1998
            NX(3)1991-1993
            PULSAR(2)1989-1990
            SENTRA(11)1989-1999

If you’re selling that car that cheap why fix it? It’s not like a car at that price point has any expectations of being a ‘perfect’ car.

I tried to explain that to her. Your selling it! You have two other vehicles to drive. Her manwhore talked her into spending $85 to have the starter rebuilt. The buyer is his friend.
Wanted to replace my tail lights and had to get parts for a truck. Thought it would be worth a shot.
Thank you for the list johnzcarz. The five salvage yards around here said they had nothing.
I mixed up the prices it’s $130 not $80. Manual and automatic transmissions use different starters.

‘interchange’ That’s what it’s called  Guy at local yard always looks in the big book. Don’t know if the other two yards bothered to look. Those were further away so they were phone calls. If it’s not pulled and in inventory… They’re not going out back to look.
Never got that far, but thanks you all.

You might consider just pulling apart the starter you have and replacing the solenoid, that’s what normally goes bad anyway. You might be able to get a new one for less than what it would be to get a used starter.

I sold a car to a friend a long time ago. We had agreed that he could have possession of the car and make payments to me. The got the car for free put $350 into getting it inspection worthy. My “friend” gave me $150 wrecked the car two weeks later and never payed me the rest. Hopsfully your sister didn’t screw herself over. I would let the guy who bought it from her fix it. You can’t expect a $500 car to be perfect, he’s lucky she is letting him make payments

This sounds like one of those situations where “Personal problems become mechanical problems”. All I can say is good luck.
