clutch problems

I have a 1998 jeep Cherokee sport 4×4 that won’t go into gear. when I release the clutch pedal it makes a whining noise. the master cylinder is dry and holding fluid and the slave cylinder seems to be ok too. What is the problem?

The whining sounds to be the throw out bearing…And if the throw out bearing isnt doing its job, their is a chance that is keeping it from going into gear…try puting it in gear before you start it, but make sure you put it the clutch before you start it, and see if the jeep tries to move while the clutch is in. If it does, id do a compleete clutch job on it.

Another thing it could be is the control arm/fork that moves the throw out bearing could be worn or even broken

When you say “wont go into gear” do you mean that you physically cannot shift into gear? Or that you shift into gear, but the car doesn’t move when you release the clutch pedal? (I am guessing the latter.) Also, the master cylinder should not be dry, fill it up. Is it leaking?

Does the jeep move or jerk at all when releasing the clutch pedal? If the clutch hydraulics are all in good shape, then I would guess your clutch is slipping and needs to be replaced.

by dry i think he means the outside of it is dry (not leaking)

Take a look at this video to see if your symptoms are the same. I don’t mean to imply that you ride the clutch. Actually, I think the film maker here may be implying something that is not true. Sometimes things just fail.
