Eric I was just needing a little help I have a 1998 Jeep Wrangler tj having some problems getting it into reverse it seems like maybe the clutch is not all the way depressed but this has a hydraulic clutch is there any adjustments to this that I can make as far as I know this has the original clutch in it it was my wife’s vehicle before she married me and she said that she doesn’t think it has never been replaced The clutch seems to hold fine in gear and shifting seems to be okay except for trying to get it into reverse any help would be greatly appreciated

      Thanks

Check the fluid level in the clutch master cylinder. Also check the master, lines, and slave for signs of leakage, BUT . .. . if it is shifting through all the other gears properly, I don’t suspect any issues with the clutch. Perhaps you need to be looking at the shift mechanism to make sure nothing is binding up, and then . . .at the transmission, since your problem is ONLY with reverse.

+1 on checking the fluid level in the master. Also check for leaks in the system. If all of that is good, then perhaps there’s an issue with the clutch. I wouldn’t assume anything in the transmission right off. I’d be looking to the clutch hydraulics and clutch first. More info here.

on those it’s often times a problem with the reverse gear. it has to do with the way the transmission is jerked at a certain angle when placed into reverse. Scotty Kilmer told me about it, I forget exactly what it was but he could probably explain it better. Anyways, I would say start with the master cylinder fluid first as well as leaks and see how that is. if the rpms go up as your driving or the car doesn’t move when in gear then I would say the clutch is worn out. But do the other stuff first.
