I’m trying to locate and repair a clunking sound on my 2001 Windstar. Whenever I drive over a rut or bump I hear a clunking sound and it seems to be coming from above the wheels perhaps in the shock tower. I watched a few of Eric’s video; one dealing with locating rattling sounds and one on inspecting front struts. I checked the lower ball joints and looked for worn bushings and engine mounts and all seems to be fine. My struts are quite rusted but there isn’t any evidence of oil leakage. When I bounce the front end and then release, it stops bouncing quite soon. I’m wondering if the noise could be caused by worn out strut mounts but I don’t know what I could do to check them. Does anyone know of a way of checking their condition, short of taking the strut assembly out? If anyone has any other suggestions of what might be causing the clunking noise, I would appreciate the input. Thanks in advance for your advice.
