So I own a 03 chevy cavalier with the 2.2 ecotec, 195k miles, and for about a month now when I shift from park to drive (automatic transmission) I can her a bunch of clunking sounds, sounding like gears locking in place or something, same thing happens when I’m at a dead stop, and accelerate, if I hardcore baby it, like, not going over 2k rpms, it doesn’t do it, just when I put more gas behind it, and it doesn’t always do it either. I thought it was my transmission, but the sound is coming from the front passenger area, and my transmission lies more towards the driver side, I’m not ruling the transmission out, but does anyone have any suggestions?

Weve ruled out steering noises…thats non cv. A clunk while the brake is engaged points to mounts or driveshaft. New mounts rules out mounts. A pressed fit doesnt have noticeable play. Grinding or squeeling when running points to moving rotary mechanical part. Tie rods and ball joints are easy to check with tire play and a pry bar. A simple spin can point to bearings (as well as play) if brakes, calipers and rotors are up to par
Does it clunk through the gears? You said it was when just going from park to drive initially. A clunk through the gears is not good and points inward of tranny not the driveshaft. Was that video supposed to replicate the mere sound or when the sound happens?
Only when shifting into drive, and just the sound when it happens, it’s an automatic, but when it shifts, from 1-2-3-4, there is no noise, shifts very smoothly.
I’m no expert on that kid of mount, but that looks like waaay too much play. The torque on it when shifting into gear is like 5% of full torque, but the mount is deforming like 90% of its travel with that 5% of push. That does not look right.
You said you replaced that strut. Did you replace it with an exact replacement, and did it come with a large center bushing? Sometimes the off-brand ones and even the OEMs don’t come with the bushing and you’re expected to salvage the one from the old mount. A missing inside bushing would explain a lot.
Im gonna stay on my limb then. Uvjoint for clunking. The grinding and squeeling while driving could be brake related or bearing related. Its hard to say without hearing it but if steering doesnt give a pop then cv is ruled out in my humble opinion.
I took it to a dealer to get it replaced, as I had 0 tools, so I’m not entirely sure, I got the old part back to compare personally, and it was the same part, I threw it away afterwards, it fixed what noise I was hearing at the time, but I can’t say for certain if it came with the bushing or not.. I’ll check into that.
I’ll look more into the ujoint, I just don’t really see that being the problem as when I turned the wheel back and forth, and side to side, the only noise I heard was it locking when you couldn’t turn it anymore. The vehicle was in the air when I took the videos, and I didn’t accelerate, just shifted.
Watching your first video I can see that engine mount looks old and worn. It seems to be allowing a great deal of movement. That movement could put the driveline angles out, or it could allow something else that’s not seen to make contact somewhere in the engine compartment. Given that it’s easy to get to and probably not that expensive, I would recommend you replace that mount and recheck for your noise. Keep us posted.
