I have read many threads on this issue but no one seems to be having the same problem like I am, very similar, but not the same. I have a 2001 Toyota sienna, about 2 years ago I replaced brake drums and shoes (Toyota parts, did not replace hardware). I hear a clicking noise when braking (coming from rear) and a popping noise upon releasing brakes from stop. I should also mention that I had replaced wheel cylinders about a year ago with dorman wheel cylinders. Could a warped drum be causing this? I am suspecting that because I have checked wheel cylinders to be tightened down properly. The springs don’t seem to be damaged nor can I pull them apart easily. Backing plate isn’t making contact. I cleaned everything a checked adjustment but found something very interesting. When I changed the adjustment it rubbed in certain spots, so I thought to re centre it using the parking brake, so after 2-3 pulls of the parking brake it centres out and it spins free, but as soon as I take off the drum and put it back on its messed up again.

Actually the shoes do make contact with the backing plate.
When the shoes are remove you will see the contact points.
what we usually do is clean those points and use a small amount

I recommend you re-check your work and/or have someone who has an understanding about drum brakes take a look at them as well…. Also, post some pics here…. that may help…

well, if something was wrong with my work it would’ve showed up a while ago no? not two years later? i understand what you’re saying though so i asked my brother who is a mechanic to come take a look at it and he says he can’t find anything wrong. It did have a good amount of brake dust built up so i cleaned everything up and put it back together and the noise went away! However after two days of driving the noise came back.
