Cleaning a K&N Air Filter?

I’m about to clean and oil my reusable K&N air filter but I am having one issue with oiling it, some people say to oil one side (dirty side) and some say both sides. What is the way that works for you?

Oil the outside and let the excess drip off before reinstalling.

I don’t mean any disrespect toward the K&N filter, it seems counterproductive to buy the cleaning kit and spend at least an hour cleaning this filter. There is also an issue of the oil getting on the MAF and creating issues with the fuel trim.
