      Hello everyone,

A while back I did a vacuum leak test on my ’93 civic using a homemade smoke pump. By far the largest amount of smoke came through the side of the throttle body, and although I can’t see exactly, I suspect it’s from the throttle shaft.

Is it possible to repair the seal around the throttle shaft? I’d prefer not to have to replace the entire throttle body – looks like the OE part is not even sold anymore.

Let me know if anyone has any ideas about this. Thanks.

take the throttle shaft by the end and check for play. If you feel the play… it is worn and I doubt you will be able to find bushing/repair kit for it.

Then you will have to look for a throttle body.

I don’t know the amount of smoke you see there but a little amount can be seen as it is an expose rotating part. If you can use brake cleaner and see a RPM change when the engine is idling, now it is more serious.

Spray it around the gasket and then work you way up.

        Hope that help

With vacume leaks i usually use some starting fluid, and give a small stray to the area i think has the leak at, and if the rpm changes at all, its enough to effect how it runs…not the safest way! SO KEEP A FIRE EXTENGUISHER AROUND…

thanks for the suggestions. I’ve seen Eric’s video about spraying carb cleaner, haven’t got the nerve to try it yet. Might give it a try once I get the fire extinguisher handy.

If you have excessive leakage at the throttle shaft then the only fix is to replace it unfortunately. There is no other repair that I know of.

Good luck and keep us posted.

I wonder if a junkyard one would work..

Which motor do you have? There are lots of throttle bodies on Craigslist in my area. Even have an extra one for a 95 Civic. Going to sell it on Craigslist when I get around to pulling it off.

You can get them at wrecking yards, but they will want top dollar for them (at least in my area).

Aftermarket throttle body is still available – about $250.
