      hi guys,

chevy astros few and far between over here in england so hope you lads can help.

had the chevy ( 1995 astro 4.3, 2 wheel drive ) for a while now with no problems but now it wont go into D, 1 or 2 with the column gear selector.

no problem shifting between P, R, N and OD, so still drivable with no obvious problems when driving.

no service lights on and no codes.

hopefully something simple . . . . anybody any ideas please.

If the trans shifts fine, then the problem is most likely the selector mechanism on the column or the shifter cable. Disconnect the cable from the trans and try to shift into D,2,or 1 using the linkage on the trans (if you have never done this, don’t worry, it’s pretty straight forward.) If you can shift into those gears using the trans linkage then you know that it’s either the cable or selector on the column.

When you try to put it in gear does the gear selector get stuck like somethings blocking it, or does the selector move without engaging the transmission?

If the gear selector is moving without engaging the transmission then its likely a shift cable or shift linkage. But if the selector wont slide into D, 1,or 2 at all then you probably have something get bind up. If that the case I would try to remove any covers or panels around the gear selector and look to see if anything is physically blocking it or if if anything is flexing or twisting as you attempt to change gears.

As pointed out above you need to determine if it’s a problem with the linkage or with the transmission itself. Make sure the vehicle has all 4 wheels (if it’s AWD) off the ground when you do that test and have a buddy in the van with their foot on the brake. I say this because if it is a problem with the transmission you might need to do your test with the engine running and you don’t want to be under there with your hands on the linkage when you put it in gear. If you find that the problem is inside the transmission you might consider replacement if you’re thinking of doing it yourself as automatic transmission repair can get complicated.
