On my 1997 Silverado 1500 z71 (chevy 350, Vortec, 5.7L) , it has two cats then into a large muffler that is 2 into one. I would like to get some suggestions on what kind of exhaust system to get. The thing is I drive the truck almost every day and don’t want to get hassled by police. I would like to have a muffler that is a little louder and deeper, or raspier than stock, a deep low idle sound, Its alright if it talks a little bit at WOT, but within reason. And in cruising I would like it to be mellow. I dunno if that’s possible but I’m open for any suggestions. Thanks!

What state do you live in? I know hear in CA with emissions the way that they are, not to mention the police. Having an exhaust would be you just asking for trouble. Now if you are in a state and you don’t have to worry about these issues. I would go with what would give the most performance. BUT you say you want something mellow. This makes me think you would be fine with just an exhaust tip.

I live in NH so CA emissions isn’t a problem. A lot of trucks in my area run true duals, and I think they are just too loud. What do you think is a good exhaust tip that will make it a touch louder? Never thought of an exhaust tip

My boss had a flowmaster muffler put on his 2010 Silverado and it rumbled a little with a nice sound. I can see doing a simple muffler change and not getting hassled by the cops.

I bought a similar truck from a car dealer and it pisses me off that somebody cut the cats off and straight piped it. Now I am concerned it will fail a safety inspection because it is not 50 state legal. Its a 2 inch single system and it rumbles a little.

First you can get your parts on ebay, which are parts made in china but CHEAP in price. Or go with the real flow master stuff. Its you call. Now if you do the exhaust tip, you will have to go to a muffler shop to have it welded. Mind you this can not be removed after. If you can go with a full exhaust, which is pricy you can bolt on and off as you please. I advise in not removing the Cats and going with a straight pipe. I have done this and saw no improvement in performance and will give poor MPG. Running true duals seems cool but if you are just drive to work and back, seems unnecessary.

on my 88 ive run stock, a flowmaster 70 series, cherry bombs, and now 40 series dual. If you want a nice tone get a catback system from summit racing or jegs with a 70 series on it. I like the sound of no cat with the dual 40 series flowies.

have you thought about running with a full pipe no muffler and just the cats? its not that loud and might give you the sound you like. And its free.

With no muffler, I would want a resonator to keep the echo down
Cops pulled me once for running a straight cat on a test run, it was toned down but still loud.

wow cops in your town must be real assholes, and would absolutely despise my brother’s ford. a 72 short piped with dual burned out cherry bombs as “mufflers”.

OR law says 93db max, just running the cat and pipe i was at 92. maybe your state is a little more stringent. always look up local laws first, and if you are right at the limit, determine if its worth being harassed by the po-po even though you are right in the legal limit.

heres a good website of flowmaster exhausts. then type in a youtube search and get a vague idea of what each sounds like on your application http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/?page_id=10995

Try the local muffler shop, tell them ya want hi-flo cats and mufflers. Gonna cost some money but you will have better performance with better sound…just my opinion
