Okay guys this one has me stumped. I have been driving this truck for about a year now. last summer it started to get a little warm when towing or long drives. It would never get into the red or smoke just start creeping up around 240 245 range. It would not always do the temp spike so i figured the thermostat is sticking. Went home changed out the thermostat to a 210 degree thermostat. I also flushed the system and filled with new fluid and bled the system out. After all this was done the truck still seemed to run a little on the higher temp side only on really hot days or towing something. fall was getting here outdoor temperatures were dropping and the truck was seeming to stay cool and was running great at around 210 which i would say is supposed to be avg temp. So i didn’t think much about the overheating issue until today driving home from work it started the temperature creep thing again. The truck is a 2006 Chevy silverado with a 4.8L V8. I have considered the following issues but cant really justify why or how these would only effect sometimes.

Idea number one upper radiator hose is collapsing. My problem with this is once collapsed why would it re open and the truck temps drop and raise again.

Idea number two cracked fins on the water pump or eroding fins. My grandpa was telling me he saw this one time on a but i have a hard time believing this.

More information that might be helpful in helping me come to a conclusion on what you would do. There is no water in the oil or no oil in the water it does not leak water anywhere system seems nice and pressurized.

Please help its driving me crazy.

Check to see if your radiator is free of debris, and if it is also look to see if your fan kicks on, if it doesn’t then that could be the problem. Also, your heater core could be clogged, which could mess some things up in the temp area.
Does the water pump look good? any leakage from there? if so that could be going wrong. if all else is good check your sensors, or even try to get it to autozone or a shop to read it on a computer, to see if there are any error codes that could be getting triggered.

Good luck Brett! I had to replace pretty much my whole cooling system in my car, so be sure there is no loss in coolant, even check the radiator cap 😀 That is an important part of it all.

^^^ I forgot to add there is no radiator cap it must be filled through the overflow tank/ fill tank there are no leaks the fans kick on and and pull air in through the radiator like they should they are electric not a clutch fan i flush the radiator through the upper hose out the lower hose no debris or rust came out so i am assuming it is clear of obstruction. I also have a code reader i ran my codes and nothing came up.

Sorry bud, I got nothing else, other than the water pump fins might of broke off, but then again I am not too educated on the newer vehicles, there could be a new part of the system that I don’t even have on my ole 95. Hope you find the problem, or someone else gets on here and diagnoses it better than I 🙂

First- according to this chart.Your thermostat is
supposed to be 186 F not 210 Change the t-stat to
              the correct temp range.

First thing is to get a gauge to make sure the gauge in the dash is correct. It could also be the temp. sending unit.
