This is more of a maintenance issue, but I know everyone hangs out here. If your engine uses oil and you don’t keep an eye on it guess what happens? This a friend’s car. 2 cylinders with no compression and a very audible knock – which I suspect are the rod bearings. A month ago it started getting noisy and I noticed the dipstick had zero oil on it. Hmm…

      It’s a 2000 Chevy Metro 1.3 with about 160k miles.

      People, please check your oil.

It does not sound like a rod noise to me. Maybe the balancer is falling apart. As for the misfire it could be anything.

Honestly i’m surprised it went 160k.

IF IT WERE ME—I would have the system flushed, and if it didnt have ANY leaks put High-mileage synthetic motor oil in it, But that is if it were me, im obviously No expert

I don’t think it’s the balancer, it’s something in the bottom end. Whatever loosened up trashed cylinders 2 & 3. The car always used a little bit of oil, but this is what happens when the oil doesn’t get checked and you go 15-20K on oil and you almost run out.

It’s a shame because it was a strong engine, but I guess she got her money’s worth out of it – nearly 60k miles.

The only way to fix that thing is to put it in the crusher. I’d actually like to take apart the engine to see what failed, but that would ruin her chances of selling it for a couple hundred bucks.

LoL….Yeah….I guess if the rods are no longer connected to the crankshaft it wouldn’t have a rod noise.
