Can anyone tell me how to check an internal resister coil on a 69 bug. Can this be checked with a multimeter–if so how do I hook it up and what should the readings be. Would appreciate any help. Kenny

using a dvom or test light. Turn your ignition switch to on
without starting. Terminal 15 is pos+ and terminal 1 is neg-
12v should be seen at the coil. Next use a spark tester to
verify a good blue spark. The ohms test is inconclusive.
Check the points in the distributor. They are a common wear item.

I’m having starting issues when engine is warmed up after sitting 20 to 30 minutes. It cranks 6 to 10 times it finally starts and I smell gas. I wondered if the gas smell is a carb. issue or the coil is weak when it gets warmed up. Starts 1st turn in the morning. Thank You Kenny

What usually happens to these coils is the secondary winding (very fine wire) gets a break in it. Ordinarily when this happens the car will start and drive fine for a few minutes until the coil gets warm. Then the engine stops. However, I did encounter one that gave a weak spark when hot.

When the problem you are having occurs, with the ignition on but engine not running, pull the coil wire out of the distributor cap, remove the distributor cap and while holding the end of the coil wire near some metal object, open the points with your finger (the distributor shaft has to be where the points are closed to do this test) and see if you get a hot spark. If not you need a coil.
