im going to pick up my 98 dodge ram 1500 4×4 5.2L from a small car dealer on tuesday. i went yesterday to check it out. i scanned it with my scanner and pulled 2 codes, one was O2 high voltage bank 1 sensor 2 and the other was manufacturer specific (dont remember what it was). anyway when i scanned it, my tool said the check engine light should be on but it wasnt. and when i turned to key to ON (not start) all the light come on then turn off like theyre supposed to except the CEL. being that its a small car dealer, im sure they were trying to hide something. im thinking they pulled the bulb out to hide the codes but id like to get it working again just in case it needs to come on for something more serious than an O2 sensor code. my question is can i replace the bulb? if i can where could i get a replacement. is it just a regular LED or a specific bulb? never had to deal with something like this so i wouldnt know anything about the actual CEL light.

The bulbs are regular incandescent lights that are easily obtained. You have to pull the instrument cluster to get to them. Sometimes there is a chime that goes off also when the cel or abs light is removed or goes bad. For that reason you may find they just put black tape in the bulb cavity. I’ve seen this a few times with vehicles from the auction.

Good to know you will be able to save time by using the right tool and know to unmount your truck part correctly and mount It whit the correct force whit a tork meter. 🙂

It really depends on how and IF they disabled it. In a situation like that would you really want to get into a vehicle that someone was trying to hide something from you?
