in the next few days im gonna buy a 98 dodge ram with the 5.2. i have a cheap performance chip i got from a friend. i think he only paid something like $80. its made specificaly for 5.2/5.9 dodge engines. i dont remember the brand but i do know its cheap. id like to hook it up to my truck but im not sure i should. would hooking up a cheap performance chip harm my engine at all? the new truck only has 147,000 on it. i dont want to hook it up if theres a chance itll do harm to my engine. ill post an update with the brand name tomarow. would a chip do anything with a gas engine anyway? i know there pretty big on a diesel but in not sure about a gas. and info/ advice on gas performance chips or any damage that could be caused by one is appreciated.

does it plug into the computer or does it get wired in?

wired in. i think it wires up to the MAF sensor and something else. my guess is that all it does is makes the truck think there is more air coming in then there actualy is putting more fuel into the engine.

dont use it. anything that ‘tricks’ your ecu into thinking something is happening thats not its not a good idea. A real chip will go into the computer and can give more horse power or torque or whatever the chip is designed to do. given its a 97 and you have obd2 look into a programmer rather than a chip.

I fully agree . do not use that chip . you will do some massive damage damage to your engine and i can tell you now . you dont want to replace your engine

its an slr motorsports. it hooks inline into the MAF sensor. i did some research and found out that its a big scam. i popped it oped and saw 2 wires cold soldered to a resistor. piece of junk. im glad i didnt pay any money for it.

glad you did not install it. if your looking for more
power try a power tuner. If they make one for your vehicle.
                      Edge,bulley dog,jet,super chips just to name a few.answer a
few questions with the programmer and unleash more power and torque.

yeah, those things are garbage, they try to trick the sensor into thinking it’s cold air coming in all the time and the ecu compensates by adding more fuel and adjusting the timeing a little bit. what a bunch of horse s**t!

yea im glad i didnt install it. i know SCT makes a good tuner for my truck so i might save up a little bit of money and buy one of them. do progammers like the “bully dog watch dog” have a big affect on power? is there any difference between a programmer with a monitor and a handheld tuner? i wanna get the best bang for my money so i wanna get some facts about these things before i go and buy one.

whats nice about the hand held programers/tuners is the programer
will download your stock program. Then what ever changes that are
made are safe for the engine.there is usually different levels
to choose from.from more HP and performance. towing.what truck
                            do you have? make,model,engine.

itll be a 98 dodge ram 1500 4×4 5.2L 4 door with the long box. the ony reason im leaning towards a programmer with a dash mounted monitor is because i can watch live PIDs and check DTCs (on some models) without having to plug in a scanner or handheld tuner everytime i wanna check something. both types are around the same price, im just trying to weight out the pros and cons of both types.

i haul things occasionaly but nothing real heavy (appliances, my boat, ice fish house, and some other things). i mostly would be using it for a daily driver but there are days where my foot gains some weight so id like to have a performance tune availible along with an economy tune.
