I have a 2001 Ford Focus ZX3, wife was driving then the dash lights, gauges, radio all go dead. Car then starts bucking real bad and then dies. Tries to crank it, nothing happens. She get’s it jump started it starts right up. Pull the jumper cables car stays running. Battery is holding a charge and the alt is reading 13.8. I was thinking loose or bad ground or frayed wire. Anyone out there have any ideas on what the problem could be?

I’m fairly sure the output should read over 14v with the engine running. What is battery voltage with the engine not running? Either way, if the car stops whilst running then that does sound like alternator but you could have a fuel pump issue also. Any engine codes?

Recommend you check to ensure the cables are clean and tight and have the battery load tested… Sounds like a bad battery..

The battery reads 12.6 with the engine off and 13.8 with it on. No codes.

Im hoping its a loose wire or at most the battery. It would suck to have to replace the alt on this car.

What is the voltage reading with all loads on. 13.8 itself isn’t necessarily indicating a bad alternator, but if it drops under load then it’s toast.

                  Voltage didn’t drop under load.
