Hello everyone I recently bought an 04 buick lesabre and I got a p0128 code on it and the car takes a pretty long time to warm up so im thinking most likely the thermostat needs replaced. So I’m going to be doing this myself ive done some researched and watched vids all seems pretty straight forward my question is do i need to drain any coolant before changing the thermostat I watched a video where there was no draining involved but there was another video where this guy drained his coolant so I’m not sure what I’m supposed to do any help I would appreciate very much and I do know some coolant may come out when taking off the thermostat housing so I plan on putting a drain underneath the car I also plan on refilling new coolant if any comes out so there would be no issue mixing in new with old would there?

Depending on the position of the thermostat you don’t need to drain the coolant completely but it is better to drain some and reducing the chance of a mess and making the connectors or some electrical components wet if there is any on the way.

Refilling with new coolant is fine. If you have dirty cooling system it is better you flush the whole system and then refill.
