Changing out battery terminals

It has come to my attention that disconnecting the battery terminals to change them out on Hondas and some Nissans without maintaining power to the system can be detrimental to the computer. May I get further explantation and a “how-to” on this procedure? If a ground is kept to the vehicle through a pair of jumper cables connected to another battery where is the best place to connect a positive lead to maintain power while the positive cable is disconnected from the battery in the vehicle?
