I blew the engine in my 2000 Malibu and I’m going to swap the engine out. Any tips and pointers to make this job easy as possible on me?

the ability to change engines in a great skill to learn. it is the difference between continuing to cruise in your sweet ride vs. the average joe who would be forced to part ways with their vehicle.

before you do anything, make sure that you are totally 100% comfortable with how to set the engine timing. every vehicle is different. look “in the book” on how to preform this procedure. DOHC intereference engines can be difficult as far as setting timing and could require the use of special tools.

do as much homework as you can. get chilton/haynes books and read up on how to perform the swap. if possible, look at the alldata procedure as well. see if there is a youtube on someone else performing the same or similar swap; you can learn a lot from someone else’s struggle.

ask friends and family or whoever if they have performed an engine swap, and if it was a similar type of engine, and what their experience was with the procedure.

depending on the vehicle, removing the front clip could help greatly.

do a valve adjustment on the new engine before it is installed into the vehicle.

some people would arbitrarily change the engine mounts with new ones just based on the ease of doing so since the engine is already out.. a “repair of opportunity.”

take lots of pictures. take video. mark all electrical connections. bag and tag all fasteners.

I like this ETCG engine swap.. very basic and straight forward:

You’re going to need plenty of space to work and time to get the work done. Work carefully and keep your parts and fasteners organized. Avoid disconnecting the AC as that should be evacuated before it’s disconnected. It’s really just parts replacement but there are a lot of parts and fasteners to deal with so once again stay organized, you might even want to take pictures along the way.
