Hi guys, so I just replaced both front rotors and pads in my 1998 Honda Civic Ex and along the process I noticed few things.

      1. The slider pins, one had a rubber insert at the tip but the other didn’t. Is that normal? Also does it matter which one is installed on top or bottom caliper bracket? I had forgot if it was on the top or bottom and installed it on the top.

I also noticed the other side was missing the rubber insert on the pin with the groove for one. Will this affect anything?

And I’m wondering what those are for anyway?

      2. The brake pad wear indicators, are they installed up or down? I installed them with the wear indicator down. If that’s wrong will it affect anything?

      Thanks!

The rubber pieces on the tip are to mediate some noises I believe, not something to worry about but new pins can be had cheap. Teh proper placement is probably wherever they came from.

Brake pads with the indicators go to the inside position. They tend to be the ones that wear down first.

Wear indicator on the inside yes but does it matter if they’re on the top or bottom?

It shouldn’t. You could always refer to the pads you removed to see if they wore like a wedge at all. If they did it would be best to put it on the more worn end. That is to say the end that will wear down faster.

Most, if not all, of your questions where covered here.

It’s imperative that you only use silicone paste on the slide pins. Using grease or petroleum based products is likely the reason you don’t have the rubber damper anymore.

The pins are often marked on the caliper and the bracket as to where they go. Often the pin with the damper goes at the top.

Without the rubber, it might rattle around some making occasional noise. Nothing to really be concerned about.

              More info here.

Thanks Eric! I’ve actually browsed that. It didn’t state (or maybe I missed it?) why the pins with the damper go on the top and what’d happen if it was accidentally installed on the bottom.

Also I don’t know if it’s something else and a coincidence but, now ever so randomly mostly on sharp left turns while braking I can hear a “click” sound. It’s not constant like with a CV noise it’s more of a single metallic “click”

                Any ideas?

That click noise is the absence of that damper. It could also be the pads themselves. Not all aftermarket pads fit well.

Perhaps the info about the pins is here.

                  It’s defiantly in here.

What’s strange is I replaced the pads with same ones I had in there “Wagner thermo quiet ceramic” and I never heard that click noise for the four years they were on the car and without that damper (guessing it wasn’t there the entire time”

Ok turns out it was the backing plate. Somehow the left side got bent forward causing tension trying to release so would “click” at times.

Of course I didn’t catch that till I went through everything trying to find cause of the problem lol

Ah well I bought a boot kit for the brakes and now both sides have that rubber end cap on the top sliders so my brakes should be happy!

                        Omg the clicking is back!

I’m wondering, if it was brake related it should click anytime I brake right? Not just when I make a quick sharp left turn when slowing down?

                        It’s not a CV I know for a fact

I’ve checked those out and I still believe it’s something with the brakes.

I’ve noticed I can reproduce the sound on slow sharp left turns which will click and if I apply the brakes the clicking happens more.

Nothing in the brakes seem loose though so I’m stumped. Could those pad retaining clips be the cause somehow? They’re new I didn’t reuse the old ones.

Do you apply anti seize between those clips and the caliper bracket or no?

I had the same problem with the backing plate on my civic. Just make sure it’s bent far enough away from the rotor.

Was it making the same exact sound I’m describing?

hard to say without hearing it myself but from your description I think so.

Only while turning left at low speeds?
