Car is a 99 cougar with 2.5 engine and CD4E trans.
Often times the 1 – 2 shift is unpredictable. sometimes it is smooth and other times it tends to bump (not bang, just firm) Usually if the RPM is about 2500 it is less likely to bump. Or if I let off the gas before it shifts i won’t feel it.

Kind of wondering if this is normal behavior for the CD4E. Also for the record – the OD light does not flash.

I have replaced the TSS (not the VSS) and it didn’t seem to effect anything. Fluid is full and in good shape. None of the other sifts or engagements are abnormally hard, just the 1 – 2.
I do not know the history of service for this car. It has 150,000 miles. I do not know if it even has a shift kit or how that would effect the shift feel.

Use an OBDII scan tool. Usually it’ll throw codes into the computer if anything is wrong. My car had a shift solenoid issue that banged gears around randomly. It was recorded into the computer but didn’t throw any lights on the dash until I used a scan tool (go figure.) Its worth a shot to take it for a scan at a local reputable repair shop. I’d also suspect either a bad PCM or valve body. Usually PCM’s can be reflashed by the dealer with the latest software to address problems such as harsh shifts.

The TCC would have nothing to do with those gears. If that was a problem you’d experience issues in all gears not just the lower ones I would think. That said I agree that there may be codes stored even if your light isn’t on and this would be your most important clue. Outside of that you really only have one option and thats to change the fluid and filter however I wouldn’t hold out too much hope that this will correct the problem as it only effects 2 gears which normally indicates an internal transmission problem or an electrical issue.
