Hello Forum I have a question about the carrier bearing on my 1994 gmc half ton truck. I was lookig at it today and it looks kind of “old” Its not making any noise and i was thinking of what it would take to replace it. Ive read that it needs to be pressed on,and I dont have a press. Should I just take the driveline to a shop and have it pressed in? Or is there a way to do it in my garage? Thanks its a extended cab truck almost forgot to add that.

Do you mean ” carrier bearing ” as in the rear end or are you refering to the center support bearing for the 2- piece drive shaft ? for the center support bearing you can get it installed in the bracket and just swap it straight in. should not have to press anything. before taking the drive shaft out match mark the two halves with some paint or a tire crayon so it goes back in the same way and stays in balance. as for the ” carrier bearing ” in the rear end , that is another story involving a teardown of the “pumpkin “

I’m talking about the center bearing with the rubber doughnut around it. Thought it was called the carrier bearing,

yes that is the carrier bearing, it does need a press, if you don’t need a press then there are problems with the shaft being wore at the bearing. Not sure why i feel it needs saying but if you don’t have it on jack stands then block the wheels so it doesn’t roll when you disconnect the drive shaft. Some idiot did that in this town years ago and ran himself over.
As for marking the drive shaft before removing it I know every manual tells you that but I have no evidence it makes any difference, U joint yokes yes but the shaft is neutral ballanced off the vehicle when it is made.

If you have a gear puller with long enough arms you can get it off using that. to install a piece of pipe that fits against the bearing race ( inner ) and long enough can be used to drive the bearing on ( in lew of having access to a press )

I wish I had a press, but I don’t. My thinking it would just easier to have a shop press it on for me. Shouldn’t cost that much I guess.

I’ll say what I often say in a situation like this. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. If you’re not experiencing problems with noise or vibration I’d leave it alone. As for replacement I believe you do need a press but you might be able to purchase the entire driveline assembly which would include the bearing.
