I have a 65 289 mustang that does not get driven very much. It had a tank of bad gas I drained and refilled. Got it started ran it for a while. Now it when I put in gear it stalls. It will stop stalling only if I close the choke 3/4. Looking for help in solving this problem. Jim…

You’ve Got a Jet Plugged in the carb. Tear the Whole carb off and Clean it VERY VERY Good Make sure all the jets are Open and clear what I use is some really fine wire from a wire brush or a piece of electric wire and shove the wire in and out of all the tiny holes in the carb. if you tear the carb off and you don’t see anything. well THERE is something plugging up a jet some where in the carb just Double check use carb cleaner and compressed air (put the carb in a bowl or tub when using compressed air incase you blow out a seal or something) Put the carb back on the car and fire her up. you may have to adjust the carb now since you took it all apart.

First of all you didn’t say if it was a 2 barrel or 4 barrel carb. If it’s a 2 barrel then rebuilding is not too difficult.
The gasoline sitting in the carburetor may have turned into “glue” from sitting for a long period. This glue may have plugged the small passageways inside. The carb would require removal, disassembly and a thorough cleaning. The gaskets inside also shrink from sitting idle. When they shrink they don’t line up with the passageways anymore.

There is a 3 part video on youtube on rebuilding the Autolite 2100 2 barrel carb and there are rebuild kits available on the internet also.

If it’s a 4 barrel I would need to know the brand as there are several. (Autolite, Holley, Carter, etc.) The 4 barrel is much more complex also.

Now that I’m ahead of myself I would be checking for vacuum leaks before anything else, such as split, broken or disconnected hoses. The base gasket leaking is not very likely but possible. If it has California emissions it might have an EGR valve. If it does make sure it’s not stuck open.

Let us know if we can help any further. Post a pic of the carb and I can probably tell you what it is.

Thank you for your response. It is a two barrel. I will buy a rebuilding kit and go from there. No California emissions. I bought this Mustang in 1974. First Carb problem I have had. I am sure it must have been the old gas as you suggested. Will let you know. Thank you again for your help. Jim…
