Car Wont Stop Running

hi there car guy

my car will suddenly start revving like crazy when i am driving or when is am in line at a drive up window.

then when i want to shut it off, it wont stop!

I have to mess with it and keep turning the ignition on and off and finally the engine will shut down.

any suggestions would be so greatly appreciated as i am old and my car is old.

it is a 1996 volvo sedan, model gto i think but not a turbo.

yes i can.
i do remove the key but it keeps running.

Your car could be getting hot and doing something called “dieseling” — which means the car runs without the ignition because the gasoline is auto igniting. Check to make sure your car isn’t overheating.

Sorry for my lack of knowledge on European cars. Is that a diesel?

If so, don’t know much about diesels but it sounds like this a common problem related to vacuum and other areas but not the switch. Check this video out before you buy parts to throw at it

no, this one runs on gas.

my volvo runs on gasoline, not diesel.

Sounds like ignition switch is not killing power to spark then but I don’t know where surging comes in play. Sorry not much help. Would love to know what you find out or if you come up with anymore details.

The term “Dieseling” has a misleading name – it happens to gasoline-powered cars too, it actually has nothing to do with diesel fuel. My 1984 Honda Accord did that for a while when I bought it – it would shudder for a few additional seconds even after the engine was shut off. The engine was burning off the remaining fuel in the chambers, even after the ignition was cut. At first I thought it was my Idle Stop Solenoid on its way out, but after I repaired/sealed a number of vacuum leaks the car had and rebuilt the carb – it never “dieseled” again.
