car wont start

      I have a 2003 pt cruiser gt turbo how can I tell if its getting fuel to injectors car cranks over and starts and runs good down the road.But the next time I go out to start the car up it turns over strong but it takes like 10 to 15 seconds before it starts.Ive put a ton of money and time in it and now im wondering if this could be the problem.Dam near everything under the hood has been done or replaced in the last month.Need help pulling my hair out over this Thanks Marine29.

        What was the most recent work done on your PT? Does the car do it under certain weather conditions (hot/cold?. This is just a novice guess but my guess would be youve got a clogged fuel filter or the fuel pump is about to go.

          I may be wrong but doesn’t the pump have a check valve that keeps the fuel from draining back to the tank after you cut it off? It sounds like that check valve is bad and the fuel line is losing its prime.

            #1turn key on ear up to were you put the fuel in and can hear pump come on.#2 were is the check valve located on a 2003 pt cruiser turbo gt. Tahnks guys Marine29

              If you can hear it that means you have a good relay and pump. My next guess would be fuel filter and check valve. Ive never heard of it myself but it doesnt mean its not there.

                Went out to start car started right up shut it off and on 5 times an the same thing started right up all 5 times no hesitation? Both relays clicking on and fuse is also good stumped Marine29.

                    that is strange and intermittent problems are always the hardest to solve. Hopefully one of the other guys can be of more assistance.

                      Yes one code P0562 #1 loose or missing drive belt not that#2 alternator defective (brand new)#3 battery defective (brand new)#4 poor electrical connection not that everything tight and clean.Thats the only code that came up when engine light is on and yes it is getting spark.2 differant times today went out side started right up 5 times and 2nd time 3 times with out any problem at all.Cant figure this out thanks Marine29.

                        Even though your fuel pump turns on it may not have the correct pressure. The fuel pressure regulator and fuel check valve are built into the (in tank) fuel pump. So if any of these components are defective the whole unit may need to be replaced. I would get a fuel pressure gauge (you can probably rent one from an auto parts store.) Releave the pressure in the fuel system by pulling the fuel pump fuse, and turning the engine until it does not start. then (with the ignition off) put the fuse back in. Then hook your gauge up, there should be a shader valve on the fuel rail for this. Then have some one turn on the ignition (but not start it) until pump turns on. The pressure should instantly jump up to about 40 lbs (or what ever is recommended for your vehicle.) If the pressure sits lower than it’s supposed to be, your pump (most likely) is going bad. If the pressure is higher than it’s supposed to be then the pressure regulator is going bad.

                            Well first I need to ammend my previous post. After you put the fuse back in and hook up the fuel pressure gauge you need to actually start the engine to get an accurate reading. The schrader valve is a “ball check” valve. It basically looks like a bigger version of a grease fitting. On your car it should be on the driver’s side end of the fuel rail and points toward the stock air cleaner box. It’s probably going to have a plastic cap over it (similar to a valve stem cap on your tires.) It looks like the recommended fuel pressure will sit around 55 psi (give or take 5psi.)

                              Also if the fuel pressure is out of spec you might want to check the fuel pressure sensor too.

                                    +1 just because the fuel pump is running that doesn’t mean it’s putting out enough pressure, with as little as a 3psi drop some engines wont’ run. That said I think you need to start by finding out what’s missing during the no start, spark or fuel. Once you’ve done that you can then narrow the focus of your diagnosis.
