When im at the lights in drive and have my foot on the brake the car vibrates, it goes away if I let go of the brake or put the car in P or N.

I know nothing about autos and being in the UK (99% of cars are manual) alot of garages don’t deal with them too often.

      Any ideas?

      It’s an 87 Scirocco.

I sounds like a tired engine or transmission mount(s).

Block the wheels and place a floor jack with a piece of wood on it under the oil pan and slightly raise the engine. Jump in the car and try it in gear with the brake on to see if the vibration has gone away. If it’s better or the problem has gone away then you need to replace the engine and or the transmission mounts.

You might see a bad mount by a visual inspection also. Sometimes the rubber cracks or is visibly worn.

Doesn’t sound entirely unfamiliar. My former VW Passat had the same, or well not a vibration as such but I could effectively feel that the car was in gear as in Drive, as opposed to flicking it into Park or Neutral. I could hear the engine tone changing and feel a very very faint vibration.

Also when checking the mounts, make sure someone is brake torquing the engine for you 🙂

Yeah…brake torque it after you try with the floor jack.
