I got a 1988 bronco that had been sitting for a couple of years. It starts fine then starts idling funny and turns off. Any idea? I did drain the fuel it had and changed the filter.

Start with the basics, check vacuum lines and electrical connections. How’s the oil and other fluids doing? What’s the history of the vehicle?

You may have already addressed this. But just in case, it’s good also to pump the old gas out of the fuel lines as well. Had a similar situation a few years back. I finally disconnected the main fuel line at the rail, and let the fuel pump prime/ pump about 2 pints of fuel out of the lines. It ran great afterwards.

Sorry about not replying but haven’t had a chance to dig into the project…. I looked at the spark plug wires and a plug and they definitely need changing. It’s a v8 but I had 9 wires plugged in so I followed one and the where it plugged in was dirty and the plug didn’t seem to fit all the way. I have no experience whatsoever with v8’s so I have no clue what that 9th wire is for any ideas?

Regarding fluids definitely needs an oil change. Had no coolant in the radiator no idea yet if there’s any in the system going to flush the system out and replace it with new coolant next Friday.

History is ran whenever it needed too. Even when we first tried starting it put a new battery in and started right away. Even when I drove it ran fine except when we get to a stop just shuts off.

For a vehicle that has sat for a long time, replace the spark plugs, the wires, the distributor cap, rotor, change the oil and filter, air filter and above all put FRESH FUEL in it… Old gas turns to varnish in a relatively short period and can clog up lines…

Coolant and tires are a judgement call based upon inspection…

The 9th wire goes from the coil to the distributor.

That said, as many here have stated, start with the basics. I cover many of those in this article that you might find helpful.

Just did a tune up and that’s what all the plugs looked like. Added coolant because it had none and changed the oil. I bled the cooling system before the oil change and it sounded fine. After the oil a weird knock started on the right side followed by it dying again but the battery failed at that point I looked at the terminals and the positive side was so bad I replaced it in doing so I broke the side mounting it goes too. No idea what it’s called yet but I will need to replace that and have the battery checked before I can continue working on the truck

Every time I hit the throttle as I drove it around along with the weird noise on the right the car vibrated a little especially at the wheel.

It turned out the be a bad alternator. I also mixed up one of the spark plug wires and that was causing the misfire. When I fixed that I took it for a drive and saw the battery slowly drain took of the alternator to have it checked. Running beautifully now 🙂 although when I start driving the brakes stick and lock up after a while they brake like normal.

I drove it about two weeks ago about 15 miles a mix of city and highway when I got to my destination I was gonna back it into a spot as soon as I put it into reverse I got the check light engine and it started to choke up and want to stall. I left it and did some shopping. I crank back on and it made it back started doing the same thing check engine light and choking up. I just started It today to move it and no sign of idle problems or misfire problems or anything. Anybody have any ideas?
